What is Tithing?
Take God’s challenge.
If someone said to you, “I’m going to give you $100, but I would like you to give me $10 back,” what would you say? Most of us wouldn’t have a problem with that. Sounds like a pretty good situation! When we understand that all we have is a gift from God, and not something we’ve gained for ourselves, it can really set us free.
A tithe is one-tenth of our earnings. It is one dime out of each dollar. It is one dollar out of every ten. It is ten out of every hundred. It is one hundred out of a thousand. This is the part that God asks of His people. It is supported in Leviticus 27:30, Deuteronomy 14:22 and many other passages of scripture.
However, in giving, the thing to focus on is not the bare minimum God requires, but the ways we can bless God by offering back to Him what is already His. The bottom line is, we can’t outgive God! Malachi 3:10 says, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”
God is a rewarder. When His people give joyfully, it makes Him joyful. Now, how many of you would like to have so much blessing you don’t have room for it?
