Jesus taught spend more time teaching about money than prayer.  Why?  Because the preoccupation and stress associated with money can be such a detour from living joyfully and freely in His Kingdom. When we make tithing and giving to His Kingdom the first priority in our budgets, and not simply what is left over at the end of a day, week, month or year, we find a life brimming over in abundance (Proverbs 3:5-10; Malachi 3:10).

If someone gave you 90% of all the money they had and simply asked that you allow them to keep 10%, you’d probably say that was a great deal…

Or, at least, a great deal for you!

And so, it is with God.

He owns everything.  Everything is His (Psalm 24). The financial resources we receive in life are always and ultimately from His hand of grace to us.

The Lord welcomes our keeping 90% of all the finances He gives us.  He simply asks that we give Him back 10%, the tithe, for the work of His Kingdom (Malachi 3:10).

Why we tithe

At Discovery we encourage tithing our gross income to the work of the local body (the storehouse).  We also encourage, led by the Holy Spirit, sacrificial offerings on top of the tithe to special ministry opportunities in the Kingdom, either through Discovery or other Jesus-inspired ministries.  We also encourage individuals to have Christ like character in all facets of life, including their own finances (being a good steward).  If someone has debt, we encourage that induvial to give to Christ what is Christs (10% of our gross income through tithing including gifts from others) then make a very determined / intentional effort to pay off their debts.  We’re pretty aware that we cannot out give God, so the more we’re led by the Holy Spirit to give, the more room we have to receive and the more we can give (Luke 6:38)!

It’s been our experience at Discovery that those who chose to tithe faithfully are never out economically.  And since tithing is the only place in the Bible where we are encouraged to test God (again, Malachi 3:10), why not put Him to the test and tithe?

When we do, we’ll find something out: tithing is very real proof that God’s Word is truth.
